What a weekend we have had! Yesterday we went to a wedding and a college reunion for Jonathan, and today we threw an intimate birthday party for Josiah. When I say, "intimate," it must be factored in that we have quite a few close friends and family--but we tried to keep it small for Josiah's sake. He seemed to really enjoy the party until he realized it was about him. He was perfectly content to explore the yard with whatever doting adult was willing to follow, but once we put him in the hot seat--ie, the high chair--it went downhill quickly.
We put him in the high chair and put a party hat on his head and he promptly pulled the elastic strap back and popped his face. He boo hooed--and a smooth welt appeared bright and shiny on his right cheek. We calmed him down in time to put his perfect baby cake in front of him with a number "1" candle ablaze on top. He reached for the candle, and I grabbed his hand while everyone gasped. The combination scared him and he burst into tears again. Eventually he slowly investigated his cake, but he still kept looking around, puzzled by his many onlookers. It ended up a success, as he managed to get blue icing all over his face and in his hair...and mine.
We cleaned him up and opened presents, which really meant I opened presents and he dug his face into my chest and whined. I could tell he really liked a lot of the toys and books but was overwhelmed by the sights and sounds. We took a five minute regroup to his bedroom, and he was feeling much better after that, but most of our friends had left during that window. I fed him some dinner, put him in the bath, and joyful Josiah was restored. He had a great time cleaning up, and "Aunt" Callie took some really cute pictures of him. Of course they look like they have nothing to do with his birthday party, as they are in the bath tub and devoid of our party props like cake and party hats, but he actually smiled in these.
Overall it was a really successful, fun party with family and friends to celebrate the first year of this wonderful man's life. Now it is cleaned up with exception of Josiah's new loot. I am thinking we need to put a small addition onto the house to accommodate all of his fabulous new things. We also will have to put the toys on rotation so he actually can enjoy them. Thank you to everyone that joined us today and joins us every day in our love for Josiah. It is truly humbling to be a part of this life.
